Transurban's vision ‘to strengthen communities through transport’ is closely supported by our Sustainability Strategy which focuses on what is most important to communities, customers, employees and business partners.
Our Sustainability Strategy is based on three key pillars:
Be good neighbours: We will work with communities to create shared value with our business by anticipating, listening and responding to community needs
Use less: We will minimise natural resource use and create resource efficiencies in development, operations and maintenance to reduce the impacts of our business on the community and environment
Think long term: We will look for innovative transport solutions that will create efficient, safe transport networks and liveable cities
Every part of our business contributes to our sustainability performance. From making our roads safer and more efficient, introducing state-of-the-art intelligent transport technology, regenerating our road corridors, to improving the liveability of communities in which we operate, the sustainability of our business relies on skills and experience across the business.
Our annual Sustainability Report provides an update on key achievements and challenges for the year in each of these areas of our Sustainability Strategy. It should be read in conjunction with Transurban’s Annual Report and investor presentation for additional details of business and financial performance.
Transurban supports a range of sustainability frameworks against which we report or are benchmarked. For FY16 these included:
Listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) in the Asia Pacific Leadership Index or World Leadership Index for ten consecutive years
Rated by the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors (ACSI) as ‘Leading’ for sustainability governance and performance for nine consecutive years
FTSE4Good Global Index member for 12 years
Sustainability reporting using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Framework
UN Global Compact (UNGC) signatory member
As part of our membership of the UNGC, Transurban supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 global sustainability priorities released in late 2015.
Transurban is currently developing a formal plan to target the Goals. In doing so, we will assess our achievements to date and the opportunities and risks for the Goals that are most relevant to Transurban, our sector and key stakeholders.
An index of the UN SDGs and relevant content within the Sustainability Report can be found in the Our approach section.
